I just watched this movie on video on demand and...

Well, it's not very good at all. How far the father of the zombie genre has fallen. George A. Romero has seemingly nothing left in the tank when it comes to zombie films. I will ALWAYS respect him for the original Dead Trilogy, but everything since then has been a mess. Land of the Dead had some decent moments and was entertaining, but wasn't anything special. Diary of the Dead was a complete and utter disaster and I'm sorry to say that Survival follows suit. Truly the best things about the original 3 "Dead" films were great makeup effects, creative writing and most importantly great personal stories of humanity in a world that has been overtaken by the very inhuman dead. It's just sad to see that these elements are now replaced by cheap CG effects, self indulged writing and gimmicky kills. Survival of the Dead starts off on a place called Plum Island shortly after the zombie plague begins . Here, there are two feuding families: the Muldoons, led by a man named Seamus, and the O'Flynns, led by Patrick. Each family has a different philosophy on how to deal with the living dead. The O'Flynns take a normal stance of "shoot the walking dead and those infected", where as the Muldoons believe that the recently "revived" dead should be preserved and perhaps even taught to eat alternative forms of "meat". The feud between these two men is pretty much the back bone story of the entire film. Another group of ex-soldiers looking for a safe place to live eventually get sucked into the ongoing war of the families as well. The soldiers are perhaps the better characters in the film, but are a bit out of place here. The zombie kills are meant to be fun and creative but really just try too hard to be cool. CG gore has almost completely replaced the old makeup magic of the first three installments in the Living Dead series. To some extent, the ongoing theme of the dead becoming smarter is continued here from the previous dead films, but only briefly towards the conclusion of the film. With this film, Romero has made just another poor ripoff of his own great zombie films. The original films were human stories rich with heavy social and political commentary and satire. The human moments were the focus of the film with great zombie gore and suspense accenting the very human themes. This film attempts to cram a message in the last five minutes in an attempt to justify the rest of the film, but it doesn't land or create any real wieght to the material. The characters never truly develop or grow on you; you just don't care. There are some stretches in the film that are entertaining and it seems like it might just turn around and lead to a decent movie, but every time its crushed by some terrible zombie moment attempting to be funny or slick. It tries to be serious and funny at once, but accomplishes niether to any real extent. Its a mixture of drama, black comedy, western, and zombie film all meshed together. It's no wonder Romero has had such a difficult time getting the films released lately. Overall, they just aren't very good. Don't get me wrong I love Romero. The original Dawn of the Dead is still my all-time favorite film. It's a masterpiece. Day of the Dead was an under appreciated but equally great film(with benchmark zombie makeup effects) and the zombie genre would not be what it is without Night of the Living Dead and without George A. Romero. That being said, he created and mastered zombies as we know them, but now there are better filmakers carrying on his work; better stories by others influenced by his rich imagination. I hate to say it but...it seems as though he has nothing new to offer us. I spent $6.00 renting this on demand and even though there were a few decent moments, I just cannot recommend this film. It's not god-awful, but it's just not good either. Perhaps there are people who will enjoy this film , but as a zombie fanatic, I certainly did not.

My roommate worked on this film. He was a camera trainee on it and he said it was just a shit show. His one comment was: "I don't know how Romero is still alive, the guy smokes like a chimney.. that can't be healthy".
I have not seen this, and after his comments about working on it and your review I think I am better off just staying away from it.
